Don't expect the Washington Commanders to trade back in the first round of the NFL Draft
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Commanders are in a great spot entering the NFL Draft.

The franchise holds the No. 2 overall pick, and has six total picks in the first 100 selections - including two at Nos. 36 and 40 in the second round. In all, new GM Adam Peters has nine selections to work with after a solid free agency haul.

All of the attention is centered around No. 2, obviously. Many have pondered and suggested what Peters does; all options have been. discussed, as well. Including a trade-back scenario.

I wouldn't go any further, however. It's probably best to go ahead and shut that conversation down, as Peters all but shot it down during his pre-draft press conference.

"We feel great about staying at No. 2," Peters told reporters on Thursday. "I don't see a whole lot of scenarios where we trade down, to be honest with you. We feel great about sticking, there."

Staying at No. 2 is the best call, simply due to the level of quarterback talent that will be available and the Commanders bevy of Day 2 picks they currently possess.

Peters also said he expects to have a final decision on who he will take at No. 2 by 'early next week'. Since Washington is staying put unless something wild happens, that means it's either Heisman Trophy winner and former LSU Tigers quarterback, Jayden Daniels, 2023 national champion and former Michigan Wolverines quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, or, former UNC Tar Heels quarterback, Drake Maye.

One of those three guys will complete the Commanders' transition into a brand new era that involves new ownership, a new GM/head coach combo, and a franchise QB that the team will hope can restore the winning ways of the past.

And even though it remains to be seen just how successful the Commanders will be - all of the above is plenty of reason to be excited as the team heads into the 2024 season.
