Patriots HC Jerod Mayo hilariously addresses Tom Brady saying he would unretire
Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

The New England Patriots have completely revamped their quarterback room going into the 2024 season. However, there is one name that popped up that could change everything.

Earlier this month, Brady appeared on a podcast and was asked about a potential return to football. He already unretired once, so what's one more time?

“I’m not opposed to (coming back). I don’t know if they’re gonna let me if I become an owner in an NFL team, but I don’t know if — I don’t know,” Brady said on the DeepCut with VicBlends podcast. “I’m always gonna be in good shape, I’m always gonna be able to throw the ball, so to come in for a little bit like (Michael Jordan) coming back — I don’t know if they’d let me — but I wouldn’t be opposed to it.”

And the Patriots were one of the teams that Brady mentioned he would be open to returning to.

But things aren't the same as when he left. And that starts with the head coach.

After 24 seasons, the Patriots mutually parted ways with Bill Belichick and brought in one of Brady's former teammates to lead.

So when asked about the possibility of Brady returning, new head coach Jerod Mayo had a hilarious answer.

"Look, I love Tom and the door is always open if he wants to come in here and coach, but as far as going on the field, I don't know," Mayo said on WEEI's The Greg Hill Show.  "But if he comes in here... you gotta come in here and compete. And he loves competition.

"But I doubt he's going to be walking through the doors anytime soon."

And when Brady first made the comment, Jacoby Brissett, who the Patriots brought back to serve as a veteran leader in the locker room, also had the perfect response.

After seeing the response to his initial comment, the seven-time Super Bowl champion stirred the pot even more with a comment on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“50k likes and i’ll unretire grow (my hair) back out @vicblends @nobull,” Brady tweeted.

The Patriots took that tweet, and changed it a bit. So instead of his full comment, it just read, “50k likes and i’ll unretire.”

And when current Brissett saw that, he knew exactly what to say.

“Nope. Not liking this post!” Brissett commented on the Patriots' post on Instagram.

The Patriots quarterback room currently holds Brissett, Bailey Zappe, Nathan Rourke, along with new rookies Drake Maye and Joe Milton III. So it is already a crowded room.

But if Brady comes calling, how do you say no?
